With Determination and Encouragement – 3 Month Nutrition Challenge

January 4, 2017 2 Comments

Over the past 3 months I have been using a meal plan developed by Erika from 413 fitness and have seen some amazing results. This journey has made me stronger mentally and physically and I am very proud of myself. I wanted to share my personal experience and possibly encourage you to make some healthy changes in the new year (read to the end and you’ll see the special deal 😉 ).

For you, maybe it’s not as strict as an exact meal plan but perhaps adding a salad to every dinner, or only having 1 dessert. Or, perhaps you are ready to commit to a huge challenge like running a half marathon, or working out 4 times a week. It’s your body, it’s your goals.

I’ve always been able to motivate and encourage myself to eat right and workout so I’ve always chosen to do it on my own. While I overall was pleased with my body and felt good, I began wanting to reach more difficult goals and push myself a bit further. I wondered – what can my body really do?! I had reached a plateau and couldn’t seem to push past it, leaving me annoyed and irritated. I decided it might be time to look into gaining more personalized support.

While I begrudgingly determined I couldn’t do it on my own, I knew exactly where to go. My friend Erika had recently started 413 fitness, where she creates personal nutrition and fitness plans. (You might remember her from this post on 6 quick toning moves.) With a wedding right around the corner, I decided this was the perfect time to get a coach.

Becoming a Wife and Dog Mom in 2 Short Weeks – Part 1

December 31, 2016 Leave a Comment

December 2016 is my favorite month and year to date. Why you might ask? I married my best friend, Colton, after what felt like the longest engagement in the history of courtship AND I became a dog mom. Or should I say a tiny puppy mom?

Becoming a Wife –

The Rehearsal

The day before the wedding my aunt had a wonderful lunch honoring me and my wedding party. We ate at the Metro and enjoyed their delicious food and a few mimosas. Salmon never fails to be my chosen option. We also had an incredible sorbet at the end to tide me over until the wedding cake 😉

After lunch I relaxed until the rehearsal at the church. I must say I was surprised by how calm I was! The rehearsal went very smooth and was painless. Following the rehearsal we were off to Dinner, taking place at Waters Edge Winery. Colton did an amazing job planning it and Rococo catering did not disappoint. The night passed quickly and I was trying my best to “take it all in” and remember every single moment. The speeches were all so sweet and one was quite hysterical. Good job Best Man, Made of Honor, Daddy and cuz!

Once the last toasts were made, the last glasses were drunk, and the goodbyes were said, I was headed home to sleep in my childhood bed for the last time as a single lady.

The Wedding

The wedding was magical, I couldn’t have dreamt up anything more wonderful. From the beautiful flowers and decor, to the mouthwatering chocolate cake, to the handsome gentleman waiting for me at the end of the aisle, it was an absolute dream. I was never one to plan my wedding as a little girl, but if I had, I’m sure it wouldn’t have been half as wonderful as reality.

Avoid these Foods to Ward Off Bloat Before A Big Event

December 4, 2016 Leave a Comment

Nothing is quite worse than feeling uncomfortable and bloated in a too tight dress before attending a special event. With my wedding less than a week away(!!!), I definitely will be steering clear from foods and drinks that are hard to digest and cause bloating!

To be sure and start from a good place, get the right size to begin with, no one knows the size you get and it’s much better to get the dress that fits you and hugs you in all the right places. And please don’t do the whole, “It’s fine I’ll drop X pounds by X event” Stop it, NO! That’s too much pressure and typically leads to weight gain! Buy the dress that fits, eat well, move and fight off the bloat. Then you’ll feel beautiful and ready when the big event arrives.

Here are some tips and tricks to fend off that bloat leading up your special event. I’ll be following these guidelines all week 🙂 Who wants to join?

What Causes You to Bloat?

Bloating occurs for various reasons but the most common are water retention and poor digestion.

Water Retention

Your body typically looks and feels puffy when you’re retaining excess water. When your body is holding onto water, it’s most likely telling you that you need MORE water. Yes, more not less. Water works wonders in flushing out the bad stuff. When in doubt, drink more water. Also, potassium can help reduce water retention so enjoy some bananas, carrots or spinach!

Poor Digestion

When you eat foods that aren’t easy to digest, your gut is working overtime and much of your body’s energy is being spent on digesting food. Think of all the other wonderful things you could be using that energy for, like a cardio sesh!

Steer clear from foods that are difficult to digest, like animal fat, dairy, and processed foods. Also, while you are enjoying your food, drink water but not too much and don’t drink ice cold water! Drink room temperature, or warmer liquids to help aid digestion.

Foods/Drinks that Make you Bloated

Carbonation

As tempting as a glass of bubbly can be, sometimes it’s best to steer clear to keep you feeling your best. Club soda and fizzy water drinks are wonderful alternative to soda, but still has carbonation so try to avoid them a week before a big event. Water and lemon should be your answer.

Sugar-Free

Sometimes people opt for sugar-free before big events to help in their staying slim efforts, but it can actually wreak havoc. The sugar alcohols in these foods are hard to digest.

Dairy

Stay away from dairy as long as you can before an event. Some people don’t have a hard time digesting dairy, but typically it’s best to avoid if possible. Ice cream normally seems like a good call, but not before something you want to feel and look your very best at! (I’m looking at myself here 😉 )

Salt

Too much sodium is not good for you and causes major bloat. If you mess up and have a lot of salt, drink plenty of water to flush it out.

Alcohol

Alcohol can make your face look puffy and bloated, which is definitely not a winning look. Alcohol can contribute to excessive gas forming in your digestive system causing pressure to build in your stomach – meaning major bloating!

Good luck in your efforts to fight off the bloat! We got this!! 🙂

Enjoying the Artesian Hotel and Exploring Sulphur

This past weekend was one that I’d like to keep with me forever. Some memories can and should dwindle away, while others are meant to be treasured and savored forever.

I got to spend a long weekend with my amazing momma. We had some quality relaxation time, tried our best to unplug, and just enjoyed being together. It was just the two of us, we hadn’t gotten to spend time together like that in years so it was really lovely.

This “girl’s trip” has been in the works for say, almost 7 years, it’s technically my “high school trip,” GUYS, congrats to me I graduated high school. Haha! But as life so has it, it happened now and it was the perfect time! With my wedding date nearly approaching, some time with my mommy was perfect.

artesian
I only had two requirements for this trip, we needed a spa treatment and nature. Those two things are my keys to ultimate relaxation! Well, and wine 😉 The options are nearly endless with only those necessities. However, we both are Okie proud and love to support local small businesses so we decided to stay in Oklahoma for our girls weekend getaway. Plus, who could argue with only 1 and a half hours in the car? We headed up to Sulphur Oklahoma to stay at the Artesian Hotel.

Things to do while staying at the Artesian

The Artesian was beautifully decorated for Christmas. I stopped counting around the 7th tree, not even kidding! Any hotel that has that much holiday cheer is a winner in my book. The service was fabulous and speedy. They were also so kind to give us a gift basket of chocolates and champagne. How did they know me so well?

Artesian’s Spa – Sole’renity

We hit up the spa, Sole’renity, which was a wonderful experience. We both got the deep tissue massage, because you can rarely go wrong with that. We really loved how the steam room had little twinkling lights at the top, it gave it almost a starry-night vibe.

Chickasaw National Recreation Area

We hiked and walked around the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. It was absolutely beautiful with many falls, like the Little Niagara. There were so many huge beautiful trees, full of changing colored leaves. You can choose between many trail options dependent on your  mood. You can take a difficult hike, or an easy casual stroll.

Bedre Cafe

We stopped at Bedre Cafe, which took us back in time to the 1950s. It was complete with a jukebox and plenty of milkshake options, which I barely resisted. Operation wedding dress, y’all!

Rusty Nail Winery

We had to stop at their winery. It had some hysterical merchandise that we enjoyed browsing around and their wine tastings.

Chickasaw Cultural Center

We got in some culture and visited the cultural center. It was beautiful! We sadly missed the stomp dance, so that will be our excuse to go back!

Hotel Room

estee lalonde bloom

We also just enjoyed the beautiful hotel room and relaxed and read in the room. I am so in love with Estee Lalonde and love her new book, Bloom. I’d definitely recommend buying and reading it! My love for velvet chairs was also solidified.

If you are around the area and crave some peace and quiet, head to the Artesian and enjoy the little town of Sulphur and Davis! What are fun close getaway weekends that you have been on? I’d love to plan my next adventure 🙂

Ordering Healthy at Mexican Restaurants Plus Barrios and Revolucion Review

November 12, 2016 1 Comment

I have been on a HUGE Mexican food kick lately. While this could be quite dangerous, if you practice a little self control and portion control Mexican food can be fairly healthy. 😉 Before you go consider what you will find more satisfying – will it be having a margarita and foregoing the queso? Or just the opposite? Having a game plan before you go can help when all the deliciousness is laid out in front of you.

Tips to Order Healthier at a Mexican Restaurant

  • Opt for a dish with a lot of protein. I usually always choose fajitas because I can then make them exactly how I want. I  fill up the tortilla mostly with chicken, lettuce, tomatoes and then add just a sprinkle of cheese.
  • Choose guacamole or salsa over queso. Fresh guacamole is super delicious, and will actually fill you up. It provides a lot of healthy fat into your meal too.
  • Corn tortillas are better than flour, so opt for the corn. If you just love the flour, perhaps consider doing 1 corn, 1 flour.
  • When ordering a margarita, it’s best not to do frozen. Frozen margaritas are FULL of sugar. Look for margaritas that are sweetened with agave. They taste so much fresher and delicious, and then they actually taste like a margarita instead of a cup of sour sugar.
  • ONE chip basket. When the waiter comes back over asking if you would like more chips, always answer NO! Trust me, one basket is enough. However, if you are with a group of friends and that would be looked down upon, just put the chip basket farthest away from you so you don’t have it sitting there tempting you.
  • Drink TONS of water. I always try to have a lot of water before my meal comes out. When you want your 100th chip, grab your water and gulp it down!

To further ignite my Mexican food cravings, Oklahoma City has just gotten two more delicious options for Mexican food.

Barrios

barrios oklahoma city

barrios okc

I just adored the atmosphere at Barrios, especially the outdoor seating area. Definitely opt to eat outside because it was just adorable!

barrios menu

While I usually just like the tried and true fresh guacamole, I had to try their mango guacamole. Wow! It’s super delicious. It wasn’t too sweet, and was a fun change to basic guacamole.  Their wood fired fajitas were delicious and I loved their refried black beans. I don’t really like the typical refried beans made with pinto beans, but the refried black beans were incredible and so flavorful! I opted for the corn tortillas, although I can tell they are proud of their homemade flour tortillas. But I’m trying to practice what I preach, read above 😉 Colton had no problem trying them though and gave them a big thumbs up.

barrios fajitas

barrios salsa

Definitely plan a dinner date to Barrios soon if you’re in the area!

Revolucion

revolucion oklahoma city

Revolucion was more casual than Barrios but equally lovely in a different feel. This is a better option when you are wanting to grab a quick drink, or happy hour after work. They have a lot of different tequila options too, if you consider yourself a tequila connoisseur.

revolucion okc

While I had already eaten dinner before going, I did the most important taste test – guacamole and salsa. The guacamole was very fluffy – does that make sense? It was zesty and had added deliciousness with pepitas and queso fresco on top of it. I loved the unusual pairing of the toasted pepitas. It added a nice crunch. They also has some popcorn that came out with it, which was quite interesting of a mix but amazing! The popcorn has queso fresco and chili pepper on top – YUM!

What’s your favorite thing to order at a Mexican restaurant? Do you usually splurge or try to keep it healthy-ish?
